ParticipantHello, I’m looking for help with estimating a value for my elderly mother’s antiques that I need to sell on her behalf as she’s recently moved into long term care. The first set is one couch and two identical side chairs, only one chair is pictured. If anyone is also able to give me any details on the style or period of the set, I’d be grateful for any information I could put in an ad. This type of furniture doesn’t seem to appeal to very many people anymore as I’ve reached out to three antique consignment shops and none would take any of the large pieces. Thank you for your wisdom!

KeymasterIt’s a shame we don’t value beautiful art work but instead let fashion dictate our desires. I think your mother’s furniture is wonderful, the pattern on the upholstery is somewhat dated, but the carvings are fantastic and the furniture seems in excellent condition.
I’m not sure the style, my guess would be baroque. I would think you can find a buyer who might be interested in the furniture with some upholstery work. There are still plenty of good upholstery craftsmen (our neighbor across the street works in that trade), so it might be worthwhile to stop by one of them and ask them for a quote. When you talk to potential buyers, you’ll have an idea on much they’ll need to spend to get the pattern updated. Our someone might fall in love with the set as it stands, who knows.
Furniture is tough to sell because of the logistics involved. Perhaps you could place an ad on Craigslist or a similar local seller website and just be honest and say, “willing to accept all fair offers but must arrange your own shipping” or something along those lines. I would think you could get at least a few hundred dollars for the set.
