I found this piece in my mom’s jewellery case. It is probably brought home from one of the many sailors in the family. The kingfisher feathers are almost gone, and the lock on the back is missing – the needle is intact though. I am so intrigued by the complexity of the work, and would like to know more about it: Which period? Known jeweller? Appraisal?

It appears to be filigree jewelry metalwork to me. Here’s a link for more information:

    filigree jewelry

Unfortunately, that doesn’t help determine the age of your brooch, since filigree jewelry metalworking as been going on since 3000 b.c!

I think your brooch is similar enough to this piece:

that I estimate the value of your antique brooch in the $200-400 dollar price range.

    I hope this helps.
