KeymasterI don’t believe the 1840 is the date on the padlock, but I could be mistaken. However, your #1840 Henry Gilbert & son padlock is still pretty valuable. If your padlock is in excellent condition (you didn’t supply a photo, so it could just be a relic or be in very poor condition), then your antique padlock is estimated to be worth between $300-400 dollars:

KeymasterI think it’s a Corbin or Yale padlock. Yale didn’t start manufacturing locks until 1879, so if its a yale padlock, it would be dated after 1879. The Corbin Cabinet Lock Company formed in 1882, so if it was produced by Corbin, its dated after 1882. Both dates well after 1840.
I think my first estimate was a little high. I think your #1840 Henry Gilbert & son padlock is worth between $150-400 dollars. The numbers stamped on the bottom don’t mean anything. They are manufacturers markings that might have meant something to them, but their meaning has been lost in time.
I guess at age would place it in the 1910’s or 1920’s.
