Bought many years ago, was told it was 1765 circa sea captain’s safe. Do not believe the stand is original. Wondering if I should sell it (what’s it worth?) or use it as a side table 🙂
    Opinions appreciated.

Wow, now this is right up my alley, I love strong boxes! If it’s authentic and really from 1765, I would value it in the $800-2500 dollar range:

The hardware on your strongbox doesn’t look very strong, this strong box from the 17th or 18th century looks hand forged (as it should):

Your hardware looks a lot more modern at least in my opinion. I think it’s a more modern strong box, probably from the 20th century. If I’m correct, a price range of $200-400 would probably be more likely.

It’s a great piece, I’m sure it wouldn’t be too hard to find a buyer, if you decide to sell it.

    Thank you so much.
I believe you are right. The hardware seems thin compared to some of the others I’ve seen online. I suspect my husband is not remembering the date correctly. Maybe it was 1856 instead of 1756. It doesn’t really fit into our décor, will probably sell it sometime in the future.
I have a couple more pieces, (a desk and a serpentine chest) that I want to re-finish. But I want to make sure they are not valuable before I sand and paint.
I will post those to see what you think.
    Very grateful!
