Constitutional History, Politics, McLaughlin

An unusually nice copy of a scarce title, this is THE COURTS THE CONSTITUTION AND PARTIES, a study in constitutional history and politics written by Andrew C. McLaughlin, University of Chicago. It was published in 1912 by the University of Chicago Press. A discussion of cardinal principles and facts in American constitutional history, McLaughlin features five articles: The first deals with the origin of the principle that courts can declare laws void. The second and third treat vital institutions that came into existence as popular government developed – the significance of political parties and their relationship to popular government. The fourth article discusses the changing theories of political philosophy, furnishing foundations for differing theories concerning the nature of the union. The fifth shows that American legal order took its rise in the theory of compact and of individual rights and the in belief that imperial order itself should rest on law. The 299-page hardbound book is in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. There are some very minor areas of wear to the edge/corners and spine ends. Inside pages have no apparent defects. (5584)

c. 1868 SEYMOUR & BLAIR – cross stitch pattern - POLITICAL TICKE

This all original Democratic Party political ticket measures 5 ¼ X 13 inches and is of the 1868 Presidential campaign between Seymour & Blair vs: Grant & Colfax for the Republicans. The ticket is headed by a panoply of flags with an American Eagle grasping a Seymour and Blair banner. The ticket is from Suffolk County, Massachusetts and provides names of Democratic Party electors and political candidates to include John Quincy Adams II as candidate for governor. Of particular interest to the political collector and sewing / needlework enthusiast is a printed cross stitch pattern on the back with touting the candidacy FOR CONGRESS - EDWIN C. BAILEY – THIRD DISTRICT. An innovative political advertising feature, no doubt paid for by an enterprising candidate who realized that in a time of wide popularity of the handcraft, the needle work pattern would be a valued premium. All original and remaining in excellent condition with no tears or repairs. An outstanding piece of political Americana, this scarce handbill will fit well in any quality ephemera grouping. please note: ALL ITEMS ARE CURRENT & AVAILABLE UNLESS MARKED SOLD!!

He has served as mayor of Moscow since 1992. Luzhkov is a chairman and one of founders of the ruling United Russia party. In 1998, as Boris Yeltsins political troubles grew, Luzhkov formed his own national political faction, Otechestvo (Fatherland), to serve as his base for the upcoming presidential election. Many observers of Russian politics believed that Luzhkov and his new ally, former prime minister Yevgeniy Primakov, would be likely to displace Yeltsin. However, Luzhkovs fortunes turned when Boris Yeltsin appointed Vladimir Putin as Chairman of the Russian Government (predsedatel, or prime minister) in August 1999. Luzhkov and his party accepted integration with pro-Putin Unity party into single party United Russia, and supported Putin in the 2000 presidential elections, which he won easily.

Scarce Book Presidential Campaign Memorabilia

This early out-of-print book provides an in-depth survey of collectible presidential campaign memorabilia. HAIL TO THE CANDIDATE: PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS FROM BANNERS TO BROADCASTS by Keith Melder, Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington & London, 1992,showcases objects in the Ralph E. Becker Collection of Political Americana at the Smithsonian Institution. A longtime Washington attorney, Mr. Becker started collecting political artifacts as a teenager and over the years amassed a huge collection. He began to donate items from his collection to the Smithsonian… in 1958. This book celebrates an era when politics were the hallmark of a democratic process, serious and also enjoyable. It features essays by several experts and includes such topics as the imagery of campaign and campaign devices, emblems of honor and glory, partisan campaigning from 1860-1896, personal campaigning, campaign supporters and rallies, campaign appeals to women and—inevitably—television campaigning. The numerous color and black-and-white photographs are lively and informative as is the text itself. There is nostalgia, of course, but a fascinating lens in these objects through which one can learn of American history and the American spirit. 9.25 in. x 10.75 in. softback in very good condition. 212 pages.Free media mail shipping and handling for deliveries within the 48 United States. 08 Taft & Sherman Presidential Campaign Glass

Offered is Presidential Campaign piece for the 1908 election featuring William H. Taft for President and James S. Sherman for Vice President. This Etched Tumbler/Glass features portraits of the candidates surrounded by wreathes, the goddess of Liberty with stars all over. Under the portraits is the candidate names and the positions they are running for. Tumbler measures about 3 1/2" height and 2 1/4" across the top. May notice the Tumbler also has a purple tint to the Glass. Overall the etching is fairly good. Some wear here and there, most noticable a little to the face of Sherman. Although somewhat difficult to photo due to the glare I did take a few additional photos. Would make a fine addition to any Political memorabilia collection. Buyer to pay $10 for shipping & insurance.
