Antique Folding Knife

PLEASE HELP

Sterling/mother of pearl folding pocket knife, 2 blades, good condition. In our immediate family for at least 60 years and was reportedly carried by a Rough Rider ( however NO documentation for this exists). Has been boxed for 60+ years and was owned by another relative prior to that. It is not tarnished as it may appear in the dark photo. It appears to be an English knife circa 1850, made by Samuel Wragg. The words on the blades say S. Wragg, No. 40, Turkey Hill, and the last line is too deep into the knife to be able to read it. Blade's Guide to Knives shows 2 almost identical ones on pgs 211 and 212 photos. The head of it is a horses head with anchor and wheel. Would appreciate knowing the value, we would like to sell it somewhere. Thank you for any info/advice.

Wow, that's one sweet folding pocket knife! Pre-civil war items are getting harder and harder to find. Your Samual Swagg folding pocket knife is valuable and is worth between $2000-4000 dollars. However, the market is soft right now and it's hard to find buyers, but I don't think you'll have that problem with your knife. If you could find documentation proving the knife belonged to a rough rider (1st United States Volunteer Cavalry), then obviously the value would go way up! That's a great knife, thanks for sharing it with all of us!

Wageman office desk

Submitted by:
Main Image

PLEASE HELP

I was wondering what this desk might be worth. It has some damage - one drawer is missing its back and another has a hole in the bottom. The top also has marks and gouges. It says "Wagemaker Co. Grand Rapids, Mich" in the drawer. That company apparently closed in 1960. I bought the desk at a garage sale about 20 years ago. The desk is solid wood and has wooden rails for the drawers and dovetailed joints. There are also 3 grooves in the drawers for holding filing systems. There are 2 drawers on the left and 3 on the right. The bottom drawer on the left appears to be two separate drawers in order to match the right-hand side of the desk, but it is really an extra deep drawer. There is also a center drawer with a wooden plug where a lock would have gone. Each side also has a pull-out writing surface, as well.

This unique item was discovered while preparing for an Estate Sale for WWII Veteran. The piece belonged to his grandmother and the slip of paper with this piece stated: Triton-Epergne-Compote circa 1750-80 (Diety of the Sea) it was once housed in the Museum in Berlin, Germany in late 1800's early 1900's. The marking on the bottom are the cross swords: a triple X,large X making the two smaller x at the top. The name written on the bottom begins with 'Mis' and last name begins 'Bach'. The Compote is attached with bolt extending through the sculpture to the base. Now in my possession, the dish was acquired by client in 1954.

JEAN CARLU (1900-1997). AMERICA OPEN YOUR EYES! 1941

Submitted by: yerit
Main Image

PLEASE HELP

This small poster was commissioned for Fortune magazine by the periodical's art director, Francis Brenan. It appeared in the August, 1941 issue of the magazine, along with other posters by Binder, Bayer, Steichen and Giusti. The issue was all on a single subject, World War II, and Brenan hoped to set an example of how sophisticated design could still be efficient. Carlu who, as a Frenchman, was totally aware of the Nazi threat, takes a brave approach to alert American captains of industry and business leaders of the fascist threat. Literally blinded by "business as usual," which could have meant any commercial dealings with Germany, Carlu exorts American business to "open your eyes" to the growing threat of nazism, which he simply depicts as a swastika amidst dark, swirling clouds. Printing on the back explains the purpose of the poster series: "Preeminently America is an industrial nation and America's preeminent function in the war is as an arsenal of democracy. Yet America's capacity to produce is no stronger than the will of the men who work her mines and factories. What labor must realize is that in total war every citizen, whether in or out of uniform, is a combatant; that in the total kind of war the U.S. is fighting, a war of production labor's role is even more crucial than that of the armed forces." Carlu 52.

Alantic Kitchen Heater Stove

PLEASE HELP

Hello I have what appears to be a cast iron stove that has the following marking on it. Atlantic Kitchen heater Portland stove Foundry Company. No 101 It is about 3 1/2 feet high, it is in-cased in a white metal shell. Its rectangular in shape. The top has two stove burners. One that consists of a few rings that come out in pieces and one burner that is just one disk. The front of the stove opens up to what looks like wood stove doors but I believe this is Kerosene operated as there are two dials that come out of the left side where a type of fuel is connected and controlled. I have pictures but did not see where to upload them. The rear of the stove is some sort of iron exhaust port with small button/dome looking objects that wiggle but dont seem to move. Also when you remove the burners there appear to be two groups of metal cylinders where the flames would be with discs that say Jynn. The stove is about 3 feet long and a foot wide.

You certainly have a jade seal, here's a link for jade seals that sold for $2-10 dollars each:

I've never seen an antique nut cracker like yours? It looks to be a mold hand tool, kind of like a musket ball hand tool but in this case it looks like this mold makes walnuts. Place some silly putty in the tool and press out the shape and see what it makes, some sort of nut...

It appears hand forged and its probably worth $100-150 dollars.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Sam,

In all likelihood, if your Koran is authentic it's priceless. Here's a link where the owner of a 400 year old koran was offered $4.3 million for it.

All I can say is wow! Very cool. You might want to get it authenticated and put it up for auction, if you wish to sell it.

Hi Joe,

You have a story lock made by Trenton Lock Company in the late 1800's. Your particular story lock is called the werewolf.

Werewolf Story Locks

My dad is a lock collector and he purchased a werewolf story lock in the 1980's for $900 dollars at a flea market in Ohio (I believe, I was fairly young at the time). Your werewolf padlock is worth $900-1500 dollars.

Nice padlock! Do you have any others?
