PLEASE HELP

my parents picked these 2 statues up after WWII in Japan (have cloisonne vases with CPO on bottom & acquired same time). The top 1/2 are mirror images & as noted they're marble. they stand 7 5/8" tall and are 2 5/8" on all sides. there are two serpentine dragons on the top half with what looks like a ball? appears that they are 4 toed. on the lower 1/2 there are figures carved one on each face and each is a distinct character. could be just bookends but seems like a lot of work with a hard material for just bookends. they have some aging cracks and chips. at least 65 yrs old & could be much older. there is a lot of fine detail that doesn't show up in the photos, like the dragons are scaled, the areas above and below the figures have engravings w/ the top different from the bottom but relateable, all the tops and bottoms have the same motif. I will greatly appreciate any thought, all I know is that I don't know anything concerning these 2 statues, value, origin (other than asia), what they "are", who knows, maybe sawed off of something else.
