PLEASE HELP

I have a clown head cookie jar that appears to be hand painted. The lid is the hat,it is white with red trim, and has a glaze. The face is barrel shaped and has yellow hair and a green nose. The barrel (face) does not appear to have been glazed. On the bottom is a serial number and the words "Made in Italy." I have looked everywhere and have never seen one even similar to it. I am just curious as to where it came from and how much it might be worth. My mother bought it in a junk store in the 1960's and it was old then. Any clues? It has a crack in the lid that has been glued back together - which I know sucks, but I am not really interested in selling - just knowing what it is and how much it might have been worth.
